In the wake of Ontario Progressive Conservative Party Leader Patrick Brown<\/strong>\u2019s resignation due to anonymous allegations of sexual misconduct, the term \u201cidentity politics<\/em><\/strong>\u201d has taken on a new \u2013 and valid – meaning. In this case, the \u201cidentity\u201d in question concerns that of the Progressive Conservative (PC) Party itself.<\/p>\n

Falsely viewed by many as a party on the Right, it is no such thing. The confusion is somewhat understandable, given that the PC Party sits in \u2018opposition\u2019 to the ruling Liberal Party<\/strong>, a party most definitely on the Left, as is the New Democratic Party (NDP).<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, opposition in the legislature does not mean opposition to the ideas, principles, philosophies, or political direction of the other parties. In every essential way, the philosophy and leadership of the Progressive Conservatives point to the Left<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

There is, however, one significant difference between Ontario\u2019s Progressive Conservatives and the other parties of the Left.<\/p>\n

While the \u2018recognized\u2019 parties of the Left clearly and openly identify their parties as such, the PCs continuously and falsely <\/strong>associate their party with the Right. This, despite the fact that the party\u2019s own name defines its brand of conservatism with the very Leftist term, \u201cProgressive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even among \u2018conservatives\u2019 themselves, there is little consensus about what \u2018conservative values\u2019 are \u2013 or which \u2018conservative\u2019 politician actually represents such values. Worse, Progressive Conservative supporters seem unable or unwilling to acknowledge that where it counts, their party is no different than the other parties on the Left. When it comes to \u2018conservatism,\u2019 the Progressive Conservative Party disintegrated a long time ago.<\/strong><\/p>\n

One thing is certain. Based on the party\u2019s history, political direction, philosophy, leadership, and on-going track record, it\u2019s a leap of sheer blind faith to continue believing that Ontario\u2019s Progressive Conservatives will ever do anything that\u2019s Just Right.<\/p>\n
