The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA<\/strong>) as we know it no longer exists. In an era of shifting trade winds precipitated by the free trade policies of Donald Trump<\/strong> (no tariffs, no barriers, no subsidies, etc), the threat of a global \u2018trade war\u2019<\/strong> has now crossed the horizon.<\/p>\n

That \u2018war\u2019 is being precipitated by the nations who most insist on maintaining their controls on free trade, while hypocritically pretending to be on the side of \u2018free trade.\u2019 To them, Donald Trump is the \u2018bully.\u2019<\/strong> Bully for them. But crying \u2018bully\u2019 doesn\u2019t make it so.<\/p>\n

As Western University\u2019s assistant professor of political science Salim Mansur illustrates, we are witnessing a shift in world trade \u2013 away from the destructive policies of \u2018globalism\u2019 and back to a world of sovereign nations, each determining its own destiny and interests against those imposed upon it by other nations.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The lesson to be learned is that every nation \u2013 whether under \u2018globalism\u2019 or \u2018nationalism\u2019 \u2013 will always act in its own interest. As soon as that interest in no longer served, old \u2018alliances\u2019 quickly fade while new ones are formed.<\/p>\n

The relationship between Canada and the United States is undergoing a similar shift. Given the opposite political polarities of Justin Trudeau<\/strong> and Donald Trump, Canada\u2019s accelerated move Leftward does not bode well for its future.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Donald Trump\u2019s \u2018America first\u2019 is the right policy for Americans. \u2018Canada first\u2019 is the right policy for Canadians. Unfortunately it is not the one that its \u2018globalist\u2019 Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, shares. These are not opposing policies destined to put each nation at \u2018war\u2019 with the other. They are the very incentive that pushes each nation towards freedom, knowing that freedom is the condition that benefits each nation best<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The reality that nations (like their individual citizens) all act in their own interest, demands that free trade, not \u2018crony\u2019 trade<\/strong> or state controlled mercantilism<\/strong>, be the principle on which nations establish their trade relationships. After all, it\u2019s the only way to create a \u2018win-win\u2019 scenario that\u2019s Just Right for all concerned.<\/p>\n
