Maxime Bernier, whose recent loss to Andrew Scheer for the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) precipitated an internal power struggle, dropped a political bomb just as the party was heading into its 2018 party convention in preparation for next year\u2019s Canadian federal election.<\/p>\n

That \u2018bomb\u2019 was not simply the fact of Bernier\u2019s announced resignation from the CPC<\/strong>, which would have been serious enough. Nor was the \u2018bomb\u2019 his scathing judgement that the CPC was \u201cintellectually and morally corrupt<\/strong>,\u201d something rarely heard in Canadian circles \u2013 and coming from a past leadership contender for that same party \u2013 a devastating indictment.<\/p>\n

However, the real political \u2018bomb\u2019 was Bernier\u2019s announcement that he would start a new Canadian political party<\/strong> (as yet unnamed) \u2013 and lead it into next year\u2019s federal election in the hopes of defeating both Canada\u2019s ruling Liberal Party and opposition Conservative Party. The implications for Canadians are enormous and so is the potential opportunity – or obstacle -that a new Canadian political party represents to the electorate.<\/p>\n

As a conservative who both appreciates the principled views of Maxime Bernier and the importance of political party unity, Andrew Lawton joins us for a discussion about the potential consequences of this incredible development<\/strong>. Having recently represented Ontario Premier Doug Ford\u2019s Progressive Conservative Party in London West during Ontario\u2019s last election, Andrew shares his views on the perpetual balancing act faced by political parties on the \u2018right.\u2019<\/p>\n

From principle to process, the questions surrounding political party representation are eternal and fundamental: Should a party \u2018lead<\/strong>\u2019 the people or \u2018follow<\/strong>\u2019 the people? Should policies be based on Principle <\/strong>or on Pragmatism<\/strong>? Should a change in political direction be \u2018binary\u2019 and immediate, or \u2018incremental\u2019 and phased in? <\/p>\n

Whatever one\u2019s views on these matters, it will be fascinating to see if Maxime Bernier will become the political leader who can balance principle with pragmatism in a way that is Just Right.<\/p>\n
