{"id":9264,"date":"2018-10-21T05:00:50","date_gmt":"2018-10-21T09:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.justrightmedia.org\/blog\/?p=9264"},"modified":"2019-03-05T13:02:30","modified_gmt":"2019-03-05T18:02:30","slug":"the-danielle-metz-show-032-the-twitter-trap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/justrightmedia.org\/blog\/archives\/9264","title":{"rendered":"DMS 032 &#8211; The Twitter trap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.justrightmedia.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DMS-032-Jordan-Peterson-168x100.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"100\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9265\" \/> <audio controls preload=\"none\"><source src=\"\/\/www.justrightmedia.org\/DMS\/DMS-032-181021-The-Twitter-Trap.mp3\" type=\"audio\/mpeg\"><\/audio><\/p>\n<p>Blog posts may be the best place for \u201cthought experiments\u201d suggests Danielle to Robert in a discussion that is as much about their criticism of <strong>a recent \u2018tweet\u2019 by Professor Jordan Peterson,<\/strong> as it is about the social platform on which he made it.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cWe are witnessing a cultural sea change,\u201d notes Robert, \u201cwith Twitter, Facebook, and social media, just within the last decade or so.\u201d  <strong>Now a perpetual source for more controversies, on-line social media has become the \u201cglobal village\u201d predicted by Marshall McLuhan, whose infamous phrase \u201cthe medium is the message\u201d takes on a literal meaning in the context of today\u2019s technologies \u2013 and discussion.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Traditionally expressed forms of commentary may no longer apply and may in fact be dangerous in the courts of public opinion &#8211; particularly on the social platform known as &#8216;Twitter.&#8217;  <\/p>\n<p>Just ask Jordan Peterson, whose &#8216;tweet&#8217; on the appointment of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh (\u201cif appointed, he should step down\u201d), potentially revealed more about Peterson&#8217;s fundamental philosophy and political inclinations than did his many hours of speaking on other social media, like YouTube and Facebook.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Criticisms of Peterson\u2019s tweet from the very community that supported him in his own battle against political correctness were blunt and to the point.  (This actually speaks well to Peterson\u2019s core base of supporters, who in their criticisms have demonstrated that they are motivated by principle, and not by a cult of personality or populism.)<\/p>\n<p>Regrettably, Peterson&#8217;s follow-up rationalizations for his initial tweet were even less principled and unfocused, as he cited \u2018general discomfort\u2019 and other considerations not relevant to the determination of Kavanaugh\u2019s guilt or innocence.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the philosophical implications, what\u2019s the lesson to be learned from all of this?
