That \u2018conversation\u2019 concerns <strong>freedom of speech and the right to express that speech using social media.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Notes Danielle to Robert in her introduction to their own \u2018conversation\u2019 on the \u2018right regulation,\u2019 there was a \u201ccascade of \u2018de-platforming\u2019 that accelerated over the months after that hearing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe largest platforms are primarily controlled by the Left,\u201d acknowledges Robert, while however also acknowledging that there is no obligation on their part to provide anyone with guaranteed service.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Shadow banning,\u2019 \u2018de-monetization,\u2019 suspensions, account deletions, and other restrictions justified on \u2018terms of service violations\u2019 have become an increasing phenomenon<\/strong> that has ironically encouraged voices on the right \u2013 those being unjustly targeted most \u2013 to call for anti-trust legislation curbing the right of social media providers to take such actions.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This is mis-directed, particularly given Zuckerberg\u2019s own admission at the hearings that regulating the Internet would handicap new competition while helping entrench his own dominance of social media. <\/p>\n<p><strong>At issue is the very freedom of the Internet itself<\/strong> \u2013 one that certainly includes Zuckerberg\u2019s freedom to run his companies as he desires. If the Zuckerberg plan is to make his platforms irrelevant to \u2018full conversations,\u2019 that\u2019s his business. We already know that for those on the Left, \u2018full conversations\u2019 do not include voices from the Right.<\/p>\n<p>We also know that in order to have any \u2018full conversation\u2019 about anything, all sides must be able to participate.  <strong>The solution is not to be found in \u2018regulating\u2019 the Internet, but in keeping it free.<\/strong> Only then can the necessary myriad of alternative competitors arise to offer both sides \u2013 Left and Right &#8211; free, open, shared and \u2018full conversation\u2019 Internet platforms.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe careful what you wish for,\u201d warns the old saying; \u201cYou just might get your wish.\u201d  We can imagine how Zuckerberg must smile when he hears \u2018right wing\u2019 voices calling for anti-trust laws, laws he knows will work in his favor, and against those who are Just Right. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201c\u2026We need to have a full conversation about what is the right regulation (of the Internet), not whether it should be or shouldn\u2019t be,\u201d testified Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg before the April 18 Senate Commerce and Judiciary committees.
