There’s more to all the talk about Canada becoming a 51st state of America than most people suspect; Canada’s demise is self-inflicted, and on its current path, is inevitable.
Whether or not one believes that Canada’s becoming a 51st state of America is a serious proposition, the underlying realities that make it possible to even entertain such a discussion do not bode well for Canada.
The survival of Canada as a nation has long been dubious. Between Canada’s Western provinces and the province of Quebec, separation from the rest of Canada has always been threatened. Why? Because the federal government had in some way interfered with the promised jurisdictional authority of the provinces.
Worse, Canadians themselves have long self-defined as ‘not’ being American, a rather meaningless identity given that citizens of all nations outside the United States are also not American. Canadians in general are ignorant of their country’s history and unaware of the nature of its government.
In the wake of Trump’s second presidency, it’s clear that little has changed. What has been incorrectly called ‘a resurgence of Canadian patriotism’ against the Trump threatened tariffs is in fact a resurgence of anti-Americanism.
For example, Canadians were doing themselves no favors by the way they acted at a recent hockey game played in Montreal. Booing the American anthem not only exhibited ‘low class’ behavior, as one commentator put it, but it also demonstrated how politics can divide natural allies whose cultures have a common history. In contrast, Donald Trump recently responded that he liked Canada’s anthem, and that even as America’s 51st state, Canada should retain it.
Although many Canadians might like to blame Trump and America for their troubles, as strange as it might sound, the good news is that Canadians have only themselves to blame. Why is this ‘good’ news? Because it means that at this point in time, Canadians are still in the driver’s seat. After all, it was Canadians themselves who created the conditions threatening Canada’s unity and sovereignty.
But for Canada to survive as a nation, there is little time left for Canadians to do what is Just Right for Canada, and not just anti-American.
