Recent studies and surveys concerning human sexual behavior are emerging with data possibly uncomfortable to some, while reassuring to others.
Some studies point to trends revealing that young people today are having less sex than those of previous generations. Additional statistics reveal that more people today than ever are regular consumers of pornography.
But the biggest surprise of all is that women have become a significant percentage of visitors to adult porn sites like PornHub, and that their arousal patterns are very different from that of men, in a way not commonly understood.
According to an analysis reported by Simone and Malcolm Collins on the nature of female sexual arousal, “Women operate more along the lines of ‘domination orientation’ rather than attraction to man versus woman, which is how it is for men. For women, ‘BDSM oriented’ sexuality is pervasive. People who foolishly say that men are forcing this on women should look at the stats.”
Meanwhile, there are political efforts being made to legally require age verification and IDs to access adult entertainment web sites, proposals particularly appealing to Republicans. And on another sexual front, feminism has had a negative impact on many women who have been falsely convinced that “in order to have value they must behave like a man.”
Despite all the various sexual trends moving in different directions, sociologist and sex researcher Tina Fetner reports, in Sex In Canada, that “overall while ideas around sex may have changed in the last century, the sex lives of Canadians tend to fall in line with ‘traditional restrictive morals.'”
As sex has become politicized and polarized along gender identities and feminist ideology, missing from most sexual discussions and controversies is any relevant mention of the basic erotic impulses that drive both men and women.
Confronting the reality of these impulses in a way that is Just Right is essential to any objective conclusions regarding not only the erotic side of human sexuality, but also its political and social implications.
