485 – Ghost in the machine? / Just Right year-end review

As 2016 draws to a close, we would like to thank you, our listeners, for making 2016 Just Right’s greatest single year in audience growth. 2016 was Just Right’s first year as an independent weekly radio broadcast and podcast, free from the constraints of the politically-correct university environment in which the show originated.

Our on-line listener statistics for the 2016 tell a remarkable story: Over the past year alone, visits to our web site have increased from a few hundred per day in 2015 to an average approaching 2000 per day. “Unique visitors” to our site have increased from an average of 2000 per month to 15,000 per month. And with each passing month, thousands more are added to these numbers.

Considering that Just Right is produced only once a week, the growth in the number shows downloaded over the past year is significant. In 2015 Just Right’s bandwidth traffic of 848 gigabytes represents approximately 12,110 show downloads, while in 2016, bandwidth traffic (to Dec 21) of 4.6 Terabytes represents a minimum of 65,242 show downloads. That’s a growth rate exceeding 500% over the past year alone, and the numbers show no signs of slowing down. Continue reading »

The answers are not as straightforward as one might at first glance assume. Indeed, assumptions may well determine the outcome of a tautology that would have us chasing our own tales of intelligence.

Join us for a real intelligence gathering, together with our in-studio guest Professor Christopher Essex of Western University’s Department of Applied Mathematics. It’s a discussion about the pitfalls and promises of what has come to be called “artificial intelligence,” and why the discussion itself has as many pitfalls as its subject.

The circular debate between “real” and “artificial” intelligence may simply be caused by assuming that the latter refers to some form of “artificial human.” It cannot. “Intelligence,” however defined, is an unreal concept when used in the attempt to distinguish between man and machine. 483 – “Politics”: The theatrical release

It has often been said that “politics is theatre.” That might explain why many would call politics the theatre of the absurd. But all theatrics aside, theatre in politics simply can’t be pushed aside. The play’s the thing.

If there’s a lesson to be learned from the recent US election, it is that “all the world’s a stage,” and nationalism sets that stage for political theatre. Since most have never experienced good political theatre in recent times, it’s not surprising that, when encountered, few understand the plot – especially those who falsely believe they are writing the script. It’s a lesson that seems to have been forgotten, if ever learned.

Imagine if television had existed during the times of William Gladstone and Benjamin Disraeli (1800s Britain); would it have been censored by political correctness?

From Gladstone’s narrow escape from being tossed to his potential death out the window of Britain’s new parliament buildings, to Disraeli’s being taunted with pork on a stick while giving his electoral speeches, British politics of the era was pure drama. By comparison, Donald and Hillary’s 21st-century antics would have attracted little more attention than the mildly feuding couple next door. Continue reading »

Dr Jordan Peterson of the University of Toronto has earned the world’s attention – and our respect and admiration – for standing up and speaking out against the irrationality and destructive ideologies of the so-called “gender warriors” who are attacking him. Far from being “warriors,” they are really leftist thugs pretending to have a cause – one that they are unable to articulate or verbalize.

Being as confused and ignorant about language as they are about their own sexuality, “gender warriors” must make up words in an attempt to reflect the unreality in which they exist. As a consequence their words are unreal and no one can even remember or recite them all, let alone relate to them. The “gender warriors” are victims of their own making. Now they want to victimize everyone else.

Unfortunately, their self-imposed personal tragedies are now being imposed on everyone else by our leftist establishment and politicians. This should not be surprising since ideologies of the left are as unreal as the words they must force us all to use. Canadian and provincial laws have been enacted that make it a criminal offence to not recognize many of the more than 39 various make-believe words that have been created to define the indefinable.

This is not a “war” about “gender.” Nor is it a war over “free speech,” though that is certainly a critical front in the war. But the real greater conflict is about speech and language itself, and the planned conscious destruction of one’s ability to think and reason. Continue reading »

With his father Pierre, it was Trudeaumania. With Justin, it’s more like Trudeaumaniac. On the heels of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro‘s death, Canada’s Prime Minister made that extra effort to show the world that he is in serious need of a reality check. Like father, like son?

From the implications of Justin Trudeau’s admiration for dictatorships and dictators, to his penchant for “proportional representation,” these are signals that should alarm any freedom-minded nations and individuals.

WHY HAS FREEDOM BEEN “LEFT-RIGHT” OUT? With Donald Trump now the U.S. president-elect, don’t expect the Trump haters to let up on their hatreds.

Unable to articulate any objective reasons for hating Trump, unwilling to accept defeat with the grace they demanded of Trump, unable to understand the forces that drive political realities, completely ignorant of Trump’s platform and agenda (which we covered in detail on last week’s show) Trump’s critics resort to the use of labels they also do not understand. Ironically, the labels they use apply to themselves: “racist” “sexist” “nazi” “fascist” and the usual array of collectivist words and constant expletives used to attack the messenger in an attempt to hide a truth that they cannot defeat.

The “Trump Derangement Syndrome” as we have called it on previous broadcasts of Just Right, continues unabated as a self-inflicted handicap on the part of its sufferers. Ironically, the hatred generated by the syndrome is not really directed at Donald Trump himself. It is directed at what has been broadly – and mistakenly – called the “right”.

This is a truth we have learned from personal experience and which continues to be demonstrated to us daily. Given that the name of our freedom-oriented weekly radio show is called “Just Right,” that’s pretty much all it takes for us to be irrationally attacked in the very same way as is Donald Trump. With an “average” increase of 25% in health care insurance premiums slated for Americans under Obamacare next year (2017), the inconvenient truth about Obama’s government imposed health care “insurance” plan is this: Obamacare was a scheme designed for those who care more about votes than about health.

Back in Canada, the folly of state monopoly health care in the province of Ontario is becoming increasingly visible as more and more Ontarians begin to publicly tell their stories about their personal health care experiences within the state imposed system.

Ontario’s once gold-plated “Ontario Health Insurance Plan” (OHIP) is now dysfunctional and stretched beyond serviceable limits. In Ontario today, OHIP has become “O NO HIP Replacements” for months or years on end.

Are you skeptical about climate change and CO2? If so, consider yourself in denial. At least that’s how proponents of “carbon pricing”, “carbon taxes,” “carbon trading” and of all the other variants of carbonated climate politics have framed the debate.

Having thus dismissed “climate change deniers” as both irrelevant and morally deficient, no further discussion is warranted. The debate (which never occurred) is closed. The “science is settled.”

What those who say “the science is settled” really mean is that “the Politics is settled, and we’re going ahead with our political agenda no matter what science has to say about it.”

What those who say “the science is settled” also really mean is that “science” is irrelevant to them. Since science and knowledge are never “settled,” to suggest otherwise is clear evidence of just how wrong those who utter such nonsense really can be.

Ironically, in labeling the skeptics “deniers”, it is the accusers who are the active deniers.

The release this past Monday by Project Veritas Action, chronicling ‘straight-from-the-horse’s-mouth’ testimonies from the very people admitting to rigging the process, would certainly suggest so.

Already seen by millions of people within the first few days of its release on Youtube, the fact that the Democratic Party is indeed rigging the election can no longer be denied. It’s now documented, capable of being seen by any wishing to witness the sordid testimonies.

To say that Donald Trump was treated unfairly, unjustly, and disrespectfully during the second US presidential debate would be a gross understatement. Yet many disagree.

Even though the debate was among the most watched in American history (thanks to the presence of Trump) the vast majority of people nevertheless did not watch it. They are unfortunately relying on what they read and hear in the mainstream media – commentaries and reactions that would suggest that the media itself did not watch the debate.

From Globe and Mail columnist John Doyle’s “douchey” review of Donald Trump’s performance, to the myriad of distracted progressives in the media, journalism’s abandonment of its traditional function and status as the “fourth estate” appears all but over. Today’s mainstream “journalists” are increasingly dedicated to misinformation, disinformation, unbridled emotional frenzy and hatreds, and above all, dedicated to lies disguised as “facts.” That’s why Hillary Clinton loves “fact checking.” She knows that “facts” are the best way to obscure truths.

Like flies that keep banging their heads against the glass they cannot see, progressives of the left and right alike find themselves banging their heads against a force they refuse to see: the forces of reality about to visit their agendas of unreality. “What is Aleppo?” asked US Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson when questioned by CNN about his stand on the Syrian city. His honest question could have easily been asked by most Americans and Canadians alike.

Aleppo, of course, is the Syrian city currently at the epicenter of today’s middle-east conflicts. From daily news accounts of the violence, the streams of refugees pouring out into Europe and now to North America, and of the growing polarization over immigration policies, the West is faced with a crisis that few Western leaders seem to comprehend. As a consequence, many Western leaders end up making matters even worse.

With America and Russia at odds over the Assad regime, many have good reason to fear that a conflict much larger than the one in Syria may erupt. Syria’s problems have become the world’s problems, and the world’s problems may well be soon revisited upon Syria.

Just as many might justifiably stumble over the question “What is Aleppo?”, so too most would not be able to answer another key question that bears on events much closer to home: “Who is America’s best presidential candidate for peace?”

Answer: Donald Trump. Indeed, America’s direct involvement in Syria could be a thing of the past if U.S. president Donald Trump has his way. Continue reading »

In his September 20 address to the United Nations General Assembly, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau seemed perversely fixated on something he called “diversity.”

As Canada’s representative before the U.N., the picture he painted of his country was not a flattering one. In Canada, explained Trudeau, people his own age “find it tough to make ends meet, even when working full time.

“Young Canadians,” he continued, “told me they couldn’t get a job because they don’t have work experience, and they don’t have work experience because they don’t have a job.”

Then as if describing some uncivilized corner of the world, Trudeau announced that “Women and girls still face inequality in the workplace and violence – just because they are women – even in a progressive country like Canada.” Just for good measure, Trudeau made a point of mentioning “the shamefully continuing marginalization of Canada’s indigenous peoples.”

With the balance of his message focused on opening Canada’s doors to the world’s refugees Trudeau then turned his attention to the “anxiety” caused by his government’s ‘diversity’ policies. “Our leaders are faced with citizens’ anxiety.” In order to allay the anxiety “we need to create economic growth that is broadly shared. ‘PEOPLE BEFORE’ PROPHETS: Are you buying all the bull about capitalism? Or are you buying all the bull about socialism?

One of the more popular manifestations of the misguided debate is the often spouted slogan, which is strongly believed by virtually all those on the left, and meekly accepted by most right-wingers: “People Before Profit.”

“People before profit” is an evil idea, and is no philosophy.

It is a call for outright theft and expropriation, plain and simple. It cannot possibly mean anything else and should be morally condemned whenever encountered.

The desire to live without effort at the forced expense of others is at the root of all the world’s evils. Whether called socialism, communism, fascism, or progressivism, It is humanity’s most self-destructive tendency. From slavery to war, and all social and political evils in between, that evil desire turned into action is and has been the cause of untold misery and sorrow.

Capitalism is the only economic condition that rejects this moral premise. “Thou shalt not steal” is among the essential operative principles of capitalism. Continue reading »

DEVILI$H FUNDING: “I’m the detail,” said the devil, who always liked to Wynne.
That “detail” fairly sums up the real story behind all the fuss about political party financing in Ontario.

“The devil is in the details,” and Ontario’s Bill 201 (Election Finances Statute Law Amendment Act, 2016), introduced by Ontario premier Kathleen Wynne‘s Liberal government to combat “political corruption” through financial “transparency“, certainly confirms it.

Bill 201, ostensibly about “election” finance reform, is also about something else entirely. It contains a host of devilish details that no one in the mainstream media has brought to anyone’s attention.

Far from offering any meaningful transparency to combat the corruption in her own government, the Liberal bill broadens the Ontario government’s power and jurisdiction to an alarming degree.

The state will be able to control and regulate not just the electoral process and rules, but all political debate and expression – by anyone – even outside of election periods and when there are no electoral contests. Continue reading »

From the absurd, like invisible sculpture, to the unthinkable, like war, irrationality always tends to drift towards some form of nihilism and destruction – assuming it hasn’t already reached that point.

Using examples encompassing metaphysics to aesthetics, today’s Just Right opens with a lighter look at some of the outrageous “you-can’t-make-this-stuff-up” defective philosophical thinking that has surfaced in news accounts from the sixties to the present. It’ll make you smile. It’ll make you frown.

Whether the creation of “vagina egg art” or a proposal to have euthanasia vans drive around the country to help alleviate the problem of having “too many old people,” these examples represent some of the intellectual trends of the day. Frighteningly, the defective thinking behind such views is really no different than the current thinking behind today’s greatest political fad: so-called ‘climate change,’ and the outrageous political policies it has justified.

During the second half of today’s Just Right, the term ‘fight or flight’ takes on a new meaning when considering the fifth generation jet fighters like the F-22 Raptor or its latest incarnation, the F-35.

Much confusion has reigned in Canada around Prime Minister Trudeau‘s initial rejection of purchasing the F-35 as ‘the’ fighter jet to update Canada’s air defence. The confusion is understandable, given how much the story has changed over the past few months and how little is actually known about the particulars. Continue reading »

However, that legendary analogy may only be a small part of a much bigger picture: How does Trump’s success at this week’s GOP convention relate to the Homeric tales of Troy and Sparta? So how come only white people are generally portrayed as racist? The answer’s becoming clear: Because the mainstream media has been irresponsibly promoting the scripted narrative of political groups dedicated to that racist narrative. So honky if you’re white – because you’re a racist.

Of course, it’s a ridiculous and false perspective. But you might be surprised how many people believe it – and why.

Two stories, one theme: (1) the racist shootings of white police officers in Dallas Texas at a Black Lives Matter protest; (2) the racist accusations made as a consequence of a physical altercation between two Muslim women in London Ontario. The one theme: Even though innocent, only white people were the targets of both.

White people, apparently, are the problem.

APPLYING THE 7.9% SOLUTION TO BRITAIN’S EXIT-STENTIAL THREATS

On today’s Just right, more on the ‘exit-stential’ threats created by Britain’s vote to leave the European Union: Is it fair to contrast the values of those on either side of the vote by comparing the juvenile behaviour and irrational fears of the one side with the mature, confident, and rationally persuasive arguments of the other? Or is it even fair to ask that question?

Post-Brexit vote reactions on either side of the original debate are still running at an emotional high.

Have the British people, by rejecting membership in the European Union, created a darker or brighter future for Britain? Our first impressions of the post-‘Brexit‘ European Union will no doubt not be our last.

As the British exit from the political EU, there’s no reason why an economic union cannot continue to be part of Britain’s future relationship with Europe – a union under free trade. If there is opposition to that kind of relationship, it will likely come from Brussels, as Nigel Farage stated so boldly before the EU this past Tuesday. All expectations about the EU’s future have yet to be confirmed or proven incorrect, as the story continues to unfold.

Meanwhile, back in Canada, the Liberal plan for Cannabis Legalization is well under way, as police conduct raids on Toronto cannabis dispensaries, charging operators and employees with ‘trafficking’ offences. Many of these dispensaries had freely been operating for years as cannabis vapor lounges, tolerated under the previous Conservative government, which had no plans to ‘legalize’ cannabis. The tyranny which the Second Amendment was written to guard against can be seen forming quite clearly in the actions and goals of Democrats today. They’re gunning for guns, an agenda Democrats have worked towards since long before the tragic event in Orlando last week.

Consider it an object lesson in objects: While the left wails about the objects (weapons) used by criminals and terrorists, it refuses to acknowledge how it contributes to the conditions that make such events what some are now calling “the new normal.” But there’s nothing ‘normal’ about what happened in Orlando last week. Our on-going conversation on the US election continues, as we are once again joined by Western University’s Associate Professor of Political Science, Salim Mansur. As regular listeners know, he has accurately been calling the shots on the direction of events since the Trump card was first dealt to the Republican Party.

With Hillary Clinton the presumptive Democratic nominee, our conversation shifts to an examination of the real choice now faced by American voters. In comparing Trump’s leadership qualities with those of Clinton’s, how will Americans vote, and why? That’s the question we entertain in our discussion that looks at both political camps and their chosen leaders.

Salim’s observations and conclusions certainly are not those shared by the establishment media and most political observers, possibly accounting for their constant surprise at the turn of events.

In comparing Trump’s ‘non-political’ record with that of Clinton’s very political record, Salim exposes the ugly nature of ‘Identity Politics’ that has been made the theme of the election.

Tune in for all that, and more – after all, even when ‘the lesser of two evils’ appears to be the only option, it’s always Just Right to be informed.
