There’s more to all the talk about Canada becoming a 51st state of America than most people suspect; Canada’s demise is self-inflicted, and on its current path, is inevitable.
Whether or not one believes that Canada’s becoming a 51st state of America is a serious proposition, the underlying realities that make it possible to even entertain such a discussion do not bode well for Canada.
The survival of Canada as a nation has long been dubious. Between Canada’s Western provinces and the province of Quebec, separation from the rest of Canada has always been threatened. Why? Because the federal government had in some way interfered with the promised jurisdictional authority of the provinces.
Worse, Canadians themselves have long self-defined as ‘not’ being American, a rather meaningless identity given that citizens of all nations outside the United States are also not American. Canadians in general are ignorant of their country’s history and unaware of the nature of its government. Continue reading »
